The white-sand beaches, impressive mountain ranges veined with spectacular rivers and waterfalls, and saltwater lakes teeming with exotic wildlife are just part of the Dominican Republic's appeal. Whether you're looking to party, relax or explore, the Dominican Republic has a lot to offer.
Arranging a Dominican Republic wedding is easy, thanks to local laws that recognize out-of-towners who come here to get married. Before holding a Dominican Republic wedding, couples need only present a valid passport, birth certificate, and affidavit of single status translated into Spanish (which can be made up by your local consulate). With no waiting period and no blood, getting married is as easy as 1..2..3!
Other marriage requirements are as follows:
- Two witnesses (not family members) need to be present (with valid photo identification)
- US citizens are required to write to the American Consulate in Santo Domingo requesting permission to marry
- Parties must be at least 18 years of age to marry
- Valid passports for the couple and for any foreign witnesses
- Original copies and photocopies of birth certificates, adoption certificates (if applicable) and name deeds (if applicable)
- Single status affidavit in Spanish for each party, joint affidavits not acceptable. These must be notarized and state whether the bride or groom has ever been married, divorced, or widowed.
- Original and photo copies of the decree absolute of the court if divorced. According to Dominican Law a divorced woman has to wait 10 months before remarrying unless she is marrying the same man she divorced or she was divorced under special DR Law. Then the ruling is a waiting period of 24 hours.
- Original and photocopies of death certificates, if applicable
- Take note: First, middle and last names must show up identically in all of the following documents: passport, affidavit declaration and birth certificate. If not the Civil Judge might refuse the wedding
- Documents must be translated into Spanish by the Dominican Consulate or Embassy in the couple’s home country
You will be given a document that proves the wedding took place after the ceremony, after which the official marriage certificate from the local Justice of the Peace will be requested. The document issued by the Justice of the Peace is a valid marriage certificate anywhere in the world. |
